When Sony announced the PlayStation 4 back in February, a lot of people began scratching their heads at the very first game that was used to showcase the console's potential launch lineup. A colourful platformer called Knack? Not a dull, grey, shooty-bang-bang FPS? Well, according to Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida, that was all intentional. In an interview with
EDGE, Yoshida said that Sony's ambition with the PS4 is to explore a broad range of game genres and content, not just the stuff that's popular right now. In fact, he'd "hate" to see the platform dominated by first-person shooters and photorealistic action titles.
Knack, on the other hand, is being developed by Sony Japan with work led by PS4 architect Mark Cerny. Asked about the game's primary placement in its February event, Yoshida said, "Yeah, I am very proud that that happened. Some people questioned: 'the first game to show on PS4 - is it
Knack?!'
"It was pretty intentional. Mark's idea was like 'what about [a]
Crash Bandicoot for PS4?' when he suggested the concept of
Knack. We were like yeah we hate to see all the PS4 games being FPS or action-adventure or very photorealistic, you know big-budget blockbuster games. And you know people like these games but these are not the only kinds of games that people can have fun with."
