David Brevik, lead developer on Marvel Heroes and president of developer Gazillion, says that IP owners need to loosen up when dealing with games developers on their projects.Speaking with SPOnG about what he views as an easy-going relationship with Marvel, he said that in general, "[License holders] have to realise that they have to give up a little bit of the... stiffness associated with their IP, right?
"They’ve got to loosen up and see that we’re trying to create a game first - a game that uses their IP in a positive way. As long as they understand that, I think they can work with a developer to make something great. Something that’s not only a great gaming experience, but also reflects well on the IP."
The Marvel MMO license has had a troubled history, with Cryptic Studios initially developing a game based on the company's characters for Microsoft, before changing tack and making that game into the
Champions MMO. The license seems to have found a happier home with Gazillion, and Marvel Heroes is set to launch this spring.
