With SEGA's restructuring forcing it to focus on a small number of 'key IPs' for game development, it comes as no surprise to hear that the company is working on a slew of new Sonic the Hedgehog titles. "Several" digital releases and a new "boxed" game are planned for 2013.The news comes as SEGA's European head of brand licensing, Sissel Henno, tells
Toys n' Playthings magazine about an upcoming explosion of Sonic-licensed toys and merchandise.
"Over the next year there will be a big focus on the expansion of [
Sonic licensed] toy distribution across Europe," Henno explains. "Similarly, we will also be growing the apparel, publishing and stationary categories.
"We will have several new digital titles launching as well as a new boxed game, so there will be plenty of opportunities to link marketing campaigns across games and merchandise." SEGA's last boxed
Sonic game was 2011's
Sonic Generations - a one-off anniversary title that fused classic 2D and modern 3D action together.
