Beware High Street Retail as Electronic Arts Sees Digitall Sales Outstripping Boxed
EA's recent financial results (for the second financial quarter of this fiscal year) are good news for its digital side. That means good news for its logistics. It's probably not great news for High Street retailers though.

EA President Frank Gibeau sums up the feeling, "Record numbers of players have engaged in the online features and content downloads for FIFA 13, Madden NFL 13, and Battlefield. On the strength of our digital extensions, FIFA and Battlefield are the two biggest revenue events in our company's history. Both are well on their way to becoming billion dollar annual franchises."

Here's the deal:

Digital Net Revenue for Quarter Ended 9/30/12 $324 million compared to the same period last year of $234 million, is certainly a large leap forward. Now, compare that with "Publishing Packaged Goods and Other Net Revenue" in this period of $365 million and compare that with the $450 million from the same period last year and you can probably see which direction EA has got to head.

How much of that digital revenue is gained by selling DLC to people who have bought the physical disc version of the game and how much is "pure" digital revenue?

Surely digital revenues should be split before writing off bricks and mortar retail?
