Nintendo and the Amazing Use of Spin

Figures and forecasts can't stop the spinning

The basic facts are that on the downside Nintendo has slashed its profit and sales forecasts from those published on April 26th 2012. It has, however, shown an improvement on its net profit/loss figure for the six months to September 20th 2012 compared with the same period in 2011.

In the six months to September 30th 2011 it's net los was 70,273,000 yen this compares favourably to a loss of 27,996,000 yen in the same period this year. This is even more impressive given that sales were down: 2011's net sales in the period were 215,738 million yen; 2012's were 200,994.

The detail here is interesting in that over the period in 2011 hardware sales were 125,507 million yen and software was 89,582 million yen. This compares with 104,746,000 and 95,602,000 respectively for 2012.

For its part, Ninty provides some lovely old spin with: "Nintendo has revitalized the gaming market by enhancing the sales of “Nintendo 3DS".”

In terms of hard figures this enhnancement of sales meant that "worldwide hardware sales of the Nintendo 3DS series were 5.06 million units... Nintendo 3DS software sales were 19.03 million units."

Frankly, if it's going to take off like a rocket in any territory, I am *thrilled* it's Japan and *not* the handholding-and-debacuhed-gameplay West.

(And no, I don't venerate Japanese pop culture, but they *do*, still, make the best games on Earth.)
