Had your fill of the Final Fantasy XIII series yet? Square Enix has more in store for you - a third game in the continuum titled Lightning Returns. But, rather than a sequel to Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2, it will act as a standalone title that concludes the story of female protagonist Lightning.Because of its standalone nature,
Lightning Returns will feature slightly different gameplay mechanics, emphasising exploration across four different islands that can be accessed by monorail. The idea is that players can decide how Lightning spends her final hours as the world tumbles towards imminent destruction.
A day and night cycle will be implemented, with quests only available at certain times. In a true departure from the series, Lightning herself will be fully customisable, be able to traverse environments much more dynamically and will be directly controllable in battle. Some social networking integration is also apparently planned.
The game will be released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2013.
