Super Smash Bros: Melee, known as Dairanto Smash Bros. DX in Japan, will become the first Japanese GameCube title to break the magical 'one million copies sold' mark later this week.
This success is further highlighted by the fact that the game has only been on sale for two weeks.
Pundits were as baffled as Nintendo was worried by the Japanese gaming community’s somewhat indifferent regard of the GameCube. It sold reasonably at launch, but sales soon fell away. Then we found out why. As soon as the Orange and Black consoles went on sale, accompanied by Smash Bros, hardware sales tripled.
It looks as though the GameCube is steadily gaining a comfortable foothold for itself in Japan. Is there any room left for the Xbox? There certainly won’t be under the TV!
