Don't look now, but we've just gone back in time to the 1990s. A Kickstarter campaign for a virtual reality headset has smashed its $250,000 target in a single day, thanks to enthusiastic support from Valve, Epic and id Software.

The Oculus Rift isn't just any old VR tech, though - designer Palmer Luckey describes it as "the first truly immersive virtual reality headset for video games." At the time of writing, the Kickstarter has generated over $800,000 - ensuring that the project will become an industry reality.

Valve's Gabe Newell and Epic's Cliff Bleszinski have offered support to the Oculus Rift, as has id Software's John Carmack. It was revealed that Doom 3 will be the first game to be compatible with the peripheral.

"The consumer version of the Rift is still a ways down the road," the Kickstarter page reads, but with this financial boost it will not take a very long time to get the tech into the hands of developers. Which will, in turn, expedite the process in getting the device to consumers.
