SEGA's flagship MMO, Phantasy Star Online 2, has reached 730,000 registered users since its Japanese launch on July 4th. To celebrate, the company is planning three separate updates in August that will add character costumes and more brutal enemies to tackle. It was also announced that, in its first three weeks of service,
PSO2 reached a peak of 91,513 simultaneous user connections. That happened on July 7 at 23:00. Not bad for a fledgling MMORPG.
Phantasy Star Online 2 is the headline act in SEGA's move into the mobile and digital space. The original, released on Sega Dreamcast in 2001, was an unprecedented success in the early days of dial-up Internet. This free-to-play sequel relies on microtransactions as a revenue source.
The game is only available in Japanese right now, although international users can follow some translated instructions to download and use the PC client without any hassle. SEGA said that it will be looking into starting a localised service for international markets - it is believed that a Western launch will take place in 2013.
