Microsoft has kicked off its E3 2012 press conference with a huge Halo 4 video and demo.
It started with footage announcing that it is four years since the end of the war and, for once, the UNSC is launching a massive vessel that's for exploration - the Infinity. No killing things intended.
That's not, of course, a state of affairs that's destined to last. Things go wrong and we see the vessel forced to crash land, with all hell breaking loose on board. Cue a frankly-spectacular scene in which we see the Infinity ripping through an atmosphere over the head of everyone's favourite Master Chief.
At this point, things switched to a live gameplay demo. Cortana pops up and... is the Chief being a little chatty? While there's a hint of Covenant about, it quickly becomes apparent that the main threat is a cybernetic race of some sort. There are drones (lots of drones) and what looks suspiciously like a Predator that's bred with something out of Tron.
The soundtrack was killer - produced with some Massive Attack help. And, of course, it looks super-slick.
Things were rounded out with trailer showing a curazee Cortana warning that she's past her AI expiry date and promising an ancient evil. It's all looking sufficiently ace. Keep your eyes on SPOnG for more of Microsoft at E3...
