Smartly-dressed curb-stomper Kazuma Kiryu won't be the only character you will get to play as in SEGA's upcoming Yakuza 5. The game will follow a similar structure to its canonical predecessor, Yakuza 4, and include four other playable characters - one of which will be orphan child Haruka. It will be the first time that the young girl, constantly protected by Kiryu in past Yakuza games, will be playable. We assume that she is a little bit older in
Yakuza 5 - according to this week's Famitsu magazine, she swaps Okinawa for Osaka to pursue a dream career of being an idol (easy, lads...), but comes into a nasty situation with her talent agency. How she will fight is currently being kept secret.
Yakuza 4 characters Taiga Saejima and Shun Akiyama will also return. Saejima is said to be serving a three-year prison sentence - for what, exactly is unknown - when he hears that Akiyama has arrived to Osaka for on business. As for Kiryu, his story begins as a taxi driver in Fukuoka. Classy.
The fifth character is newcomer Tatsuo Shinada, a former baseball player. According to Famitsu, this chap was given a life ban from the sport for a gambling incident, and is struggling with debt. One can only dream of the kind of ass-kicking moves a character like that could pull off. Bases... loaded!
Famitsu reports that
Yakuza 5 be set directly after
Yakuza 4 - Yakuza of the End was a spinoff - and that this title has had double the development time of past games in the series. Studio head Toshihiro Nagoshi has previously said that he defines the upcoming drama-brawler as a next-generation, "New
Yakuza" game. Controls have been improved dramatically, and the game will switch from battle to adventure seamlessly.
The game will be released in Japan in December.
