How do you make your digital distribution service compete with the likes of Steam? You offer incentives, of course. And in a show of kind-heartedness, Electronic Arts is kicking off one hell of an initiative for developers - a waiving of distribution fees for crowd-funded games on its Origin platform.
Studios who have successfully gone cap-in-hand to fans, via websites such as Kickstarter, won't have to worry about paying EA for distribution costs for 90 days after a game's launch. inXile Entertainment's Wasteland 2 will be one of the games taking advantage of the offer.
"I have had a long relationship with EA and it is great to see them recognize and support the crowd-funded games model," said inXile's CEO Brian Fargo. "Having Origin waive their distribution fees for 90 days for fan funded games is a major economic bonus for small developers. We look forward to bringing Wasteland 2 to the Origin audience."
The offer is only available to games that are "fully-funded, complete and ready-to-publish" and designed for digital download to PC platforms.
