Sound the bell! Repent! Repent! The end is nigh! The Call of Duty franchise is going out of fashion faster than Hammer pants, according to a report on Gamasutra. It supports this claim with data shows that lifetime sales for last year's blockbuster release,
Modern Warfare 3, has fallen behind that of its predecessor
Black Ops by a margin of 4.2 per cent. It's also reported that
MW3's March 2012 sales amounted to around half of the March 2011 sales of
Black Ops.
Despite also having a weaker debut week in the UK than
Black Ops,
Modern Warfare 3's record-smashing launch - and its continued success with Elite - is nothing to be sniffed at. Alongside industry retailer woes, analyst PiperJaffray reckons that
CoD's fall from grace comes from the rise of smartphone use and casual gaming.
Or maybe this is just a sign that gamers are getting bored of brown and grey military shooter conquering the market. Can we now go back to the days when colourful cartoon creatures took over the gaming industry? Please?
