Alex Hutchinson, creative director of Assassin's Creed III, has warned of dark times ahead if current trends in AAA development continue.Speaking at a GDC panel titled 'Designing Games to Sell', Hutchinson outlined what he sees as two "dystopian" futures for game development. He described one as a "massive arms race," in which studios are "pushing for graphical fidelity and working on the sheer scale of games."
"We think about [this push] as kind of cancerous growth. I think that will leave the AAA blockbusters as nothing more than the last of the dinosaurs," he said.
The other future he envisioned was one in which the only games that sell are the ones that chase relentlessly after cash by being focused on analytics.
"In my mind video games need to have the goal of educating people, entertaining people, or at least being artistic. If you're not pushing any of these things…then I think we’re in for a rough patch," Hutchinson said.
Here's hoping
Assassin's Creed III is one of the above. The
trailer we've seen, at least, looks OK...
