SCEE's vice president and managing director has declared that the company has gone "above and beyond the PlayStation 3" with its PlayStation Vita handheld, as the new device was officially launched at GAME's flagship Oxford Street store at midnight last night.

Fergal Gara said to SPOnG, "We’ve introduced new and exciting innovative control [on top of a full suite of control options] so we’ve gone above and beyond Playstation 3 control if you like, but we've also focused hugely on the strength of the software lineup. Not just for Day 1, but we're making sure we know that it stays that way until the end of this year and beyond."

Hundreds of gamers queued up round the block waiting to pick up the PlayStation Vita - developers from Evolution Studios (Motorstorm) and Liverpool Studios (WipEout) were present to entertain hungry gamers in line and sign consoles. This included Ami Ledger, the WipEout 2048 developer who attended the event in a striking Feisar pilot costume.

First in line for the Vita was Zohaib Ali. The 21-year-old from Uxbridge had been waiting since Sunday to purchase the device - only hopping out for bathroom breaks (don't worry, GAME staff held his place!). For his dedication, he came away with a bunch of extra goodies including a selection of free PlayStation Vita titles to go with his shiny new console.

Michael Denny, Senior Vice President for SCE Worldwide Studios Europe, was one happy chap last night after seeing the turnout. "I'm super-excited. It’s our fifth major platform launch, and here we are approaching midnight with a great atmosphere. It's fantastic to see all these people here, and it's going to be great to see them get the Vita in their hands. I think PlayStation Vita is all about the experience - making sure people have it in their hands. Let's roll on the night, and roll on the next couple of years!"
