Mark Vange is the chief technology officer for EA Interactive, the digital game division of Electronic Arts, and he's got some words to say about the sheer number of developers in the world who are making "noise" that his company has to cut through.Speaking at the "Communitech Technology Association breakfast meeting" in Kitchener, Ontario, Mr Vange told the assembled crowd that, "There are hundreds of thousand of developers and millions of apps, and a lot of them make less than $200 a year, but they are still out there, generating the noise that we have to get our message through".
Cutting through the noise is just one problem he's got, the other is price and platform. He's got to contend with not only Facebook and other social media but also with smartphone and tablet gaming because all of these have given the gamer a certain price-point.
"That presents an interesting challenge for us, because we can sell a console game for $65 but on the other hand, a mobile game might cost a buck, or it is free."
It seems he's doing okay though. According to the local newspaper, "The small but growing office in Kitchener will soon be moving into bigger quarters. Established in 2009 on Weber Street, the EA Waterloo Region office now employs 24 people and will be moving in about two weeks into the building at 260 King St. W. near Kitchener City hall."
