At a recent press conference in Japan, Sony Computer Entertainment President Ken Kutaragi made some more allusions about the future of the PlayStation-brand games platform. On the eve of the news that Microsoft had secretly been planning a set-top box role for its console, Kutaragi-san has again reacted with PlayStation 3 talk.
When asked if the next generation Sony machine would be a games/DVD player only, the Sony chief reportedly said that Sony plans to broaden the scope for the machine drastically, to include set-top box type functionality.
Let’s read between the lines, then. Kutaragi-san is reported as intimating “incorporation of the full home entertainment experience with the PS3, beyond strictly games.”
This comes on the back of Kutaragi-san’s recent quickfire response to the American Xbox launch. "The biggest threat to the PlayStation2 is that the Xbox changes the industry's life cycle," he said, when asked his opinion of the Microsoft machine. When asked about his thoughts on the GameCube, the Sony boss seemed a little complacent. "Nintendo's GameCube has been a disappointment in Japan, they have sold only a third of what they had hoped," he said. "The PlayStation2 is viewed by gamers as the games console to own."
Scared? You betcha!
