Namco Bandai Week Exclusive: The producer of SoulCalibur V has indicated that future guest characters in the series will have to originate from the gaming world in order to be considered for inclusion.
In an interview with SPOnG, Hisaharu Tago explained that Ezio Auditore from Assassin's Creed II was chosen as a playable character in SoulCalibur V after the Project Souls team amended its internal guidelines.
"The guest character is always a big part of SoulCalibur, and the team always has a guideline in choosing who to include," Tago-san said. "That guideline is to always partner it with the best weapon-based character in the world at the moment. We added two guidelines for SoulCalibur V - one, the character needs to come from the gaming world; and two, the character has to match the world view of SoulCalibur V."
SoulCalibur IV featured Darth Vader and Yoda from Star Wars as playable characters - a decision that proved to be controversial with the fanbase. But Tago-san maintains that the sci-fi movie icons were the right choice for the game.
"I’m not saying that the Star Wars characters were a mismatch for SoulCalibur IV, no. In SoulCalibur IV we wanted to have a sword-based character that was the strongest and best at that time, and Darth Vader and Yoda fit that bill. So they matched the game world from that perspective."
Previous guest characters to the series include Kratos from God of War, Heihachi from Tekken, comic book hero Spawn and Link from Nintendo's Legend of Zelda franchise.
