Tim Sweeney, the founder of Epic Games, is a busy man. After starting the company back in the early 1990s, he's probably best known for the development of its Unreal Engine system that has been licensed to all and sundry since 1998 and – of course – the Gears of War series.

Currently working on Unreal Engine 4, he's taken time out to speak with IGN to cover the history of Epic, the development of UE4 and the future of gaming. He's also got some interesting things to say about the increasing push to new control systems, especially motion controls. Deeming it "interesting", Sweeney believes that motion will have "a sweeping impact on gaming" making a wide range of games more accessible to all but that it ultimately won't change where games are heading.

"I think ultimately the difference in input we provide to a game is relatively insignificant," says Sweeney. Comparing the FPS genre on PC and consoles, he thinks that games work fine whether you're using keyboard and mouse or pad. "I can see that transferring over to Kinect, but I don't think that fundamentally changes the gaming experience," he states. "Even though you might be standing up and pretending to hold a weapon and pointing it at your screen, that doesn't really change the fact that you're still standing in front of the TV watching a videogame."

"You'll certainly see very interesting new types of games emerge around different controller ideas, but I don't think it fundamentally changes the roadmap for gaming in the future."
