US retailer GameStop has been a very naughty boy. Customers are finding that their boxed PC copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution are missing a code that allows them to play the game for free on game streaming service OnLive. That's because GameStop employees are taking the free game codes out.The giveaway - purely a promotion between publisher Square Enix and OnLive - seems to have rubbed the middleman retailer the wrong way, and has decided for some reason that it has the power to refuse its customers to participate.
A company email originating from Field Operations Manager Josh Ivanoff clearly instructs store employees to "immediately remove and discard the On Live [sic] coupon from all Regular PC versions of
Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Our desire is to not have this coupon go to any customers after this announcement."
Ivanoff refused to comment on the memo, but GameStop spokesperson Beth Sharum did reveal to
Ars Technica that "Square Enix packed the competitor’s coupon with our
DXHR product without our prior knowledge and we did pull these coupons."
We have asked Square Enix for comment.
