Sounds like Microsoft is not taking the return of Master Chief lightly. In an interview with OXM, Microsoft Game Studios boss Phil Spencer said that the success of the Halo franchise is directly tied to that of the Xbox."If we lose our way with
Halo, we lose our way with Xbox," Spencer said. "
Halo and the importance of games like
Call of Duty and other shooters, that state of the art needs to continue to move forward, and our team at 343 need to move forward with that. That's always going to be one of our success criteria."
Don't worry about the competence of 343 Industries, however. Spencer said that the
Halo franchise is in the right hands with the internal Microsoft studio. "They've had the time, through the development of Reach, working on getting the map packs out, and getting to know the infrastructure and the build systems and everything about
Halo."
The studio is apparently "in a position to take over the franchise without missing a beat." That's reassuring. Roll on Late 2012, then.
