Seriously, what's going on there? Activision is bringing back Spyro the Dragon, but it's living up to its 'big bad company' image and has redesigned the cutesy purple character into something that would be more at home in an eight year old's nightmare.
The new, uglified Spyro will appear in the upcoming Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure game, but the dragon won't be the only character you'll get to play. Activision is planning a series of 30 additional action figures that can be bought in stores and used as playable characters in the game.
They're transferred by standing the toys on a plastic 'portal' that's connected to the console. Each one will have a different kind of ability to explore the game world, and as you level up that particular creature the stats are saved into toy's memory. That toy can then be taken to a friend's house and used in the same fashion with the upgraded attributes still intact.
Activision has enlisted the help of Shrek's character designer Tom Hester, along with Toy Story screenwriters and composer Hans Zimmer to broaden the appeal of the Skylanders franchise. Looks like it's working a treat so far.
A $70 starter pack is planned for the game which will include three toys, trading cards and the portal peripheral. Despite the character contortion, this kind of augmented reality sounds quite interesting. Would you get it for your kids?
