Nielsen Study Turns Up Console User Habits

It's Nielsen... it must be serious

A recent study has looked into the usage habits of gamers with the current generation of consoles and has raised some interesting results.

The survey carried out by research firm Nielsen found that of those surveyed, Xbox 360 users spend 62% of their time with games, evenly split between online and offline play. PS3 users on the other hand spend just over half of their time with the machine doing things other than gaming, choosing to play offline over online, generally speaking.

Nielsen added that the marketing approaches taking by Microsoft and Sony in launching their consoles plays a part in contributing to the above figures. Promotion of the Xbox LIVE network and multiplayer or the promotion of the Blu-ray drive in the PS3 are identified as key factors in the users habits of both machines.

The survey also shows that DVD and Blu-Ray viewing are the second most popular use of both consoles with PS3 users spending 27% of their time doing so and surpasses online gaming on the machine. This only accounts for 11% of user time on the Xbox 360, however.

Video-on-demand and streaming services also proved popular such as Netflix, ESPN3 and MLB Network taking 20% of Wii owners' machine usage, 10% of Xbox 360 users' time and 9% of PS3 owners' time.

You can check the graphs if you like over at Gamasutra. Any surprises as to the results of the findings? And what do you mainly use your console at home for these days? Any thoughts, feel free to post them down below.

Habit? Are you suggesting we're addicted?

Percentages, erm, shmercentages! Doesn't mean a right lot if we don't know total number of hours spent "using" each console.
