Those who intend to illegally download the upcoming PC title, The Witcher 2: Assasins of Kings, could see themselves on the receiving end of a fine or legal action, according to the game's developer. The team who worked on the title, CD Projekt, has explained that if those who are hit with the fine refuse to pay it they could see themselves in court over the illegal downloading of the title shortly after.
The co-founder of the developer, Marcin Iwinski, said of the matter:
"Of course we're not happy when people are pirating our games, so we are signing with legal firms and torrent sneaking companies."
The developer hopes to shift 1.3 million copies of its upcoming title when it is released in May 2011, cautioning the attractiveness of the game being pirated due to it being a single-player only RPG.
A barrister specialising in intellectual property law and joint head of Hogarth Chambers, Roger Wyand QC, added his thoughts on illegal downloading of games by saying that users "cannot be held legally responsible for any illicit online file sharing activity which occurs without their knowledge, or consent, on their unsecured wireless networks".
The Witcher 2 will also be released DRM-free which will allow users to install the game on as many different PCs as they wish as well as not requiring an internet connection to play.
Do you agree with CD Projekt's plans to punish those who illegally obtain its newest upcoming title? Any thoughts, feel free to post them down below.
