UPDATE: "PlayStation Phone" Shots in the Wild
----UPDATE ----
A SCEE representative has just responded to our question regarding the 'Playstation Phone' as follows:
"Official line is: We do not comment on rumour and speculation."
---- END UPDATE ----

Photos of what appears to be the mythological "Playstation Phone" from Sony Ericsson have popped up on Endgaget. You can can tell it's supposed to be a PS Phone due to the D-Pad and PS buttons. Aside from that, there is no Playstation branding.

This shouldn't come as a huge surprise given that Sony corporate has in the past made it clear that Sony Ericsson can't use the Playstation brand on its products.

Engadget is more than confident that this is the real thing though, stating, "the device you see is headed into the market soon, likely boasting Android 3.0 (aka Gingerbread), along with a custom Sony Marketplace which will allow you to purchase and download games designed for the new platform."

The report also states that, "The particular model in these shots is still in prototyping mode. As such, the unit doesn't have a custom skin (not even SE's Timescape design seen on the Xperia devices), and is said to be rather buggy."

Apparently, according to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, speaking to Nowgamer, "These images are definitely fake". Exactly how SCEE would know this is unclear, given that the "phone" is made by an entirely different part of the company - and that SCEE is notorious for never commenting on rumour or speculation is unclear.

My question is; what exactly makes this a "PlayStation Phone" rather than a Sony Ericsson Android phone with PS trademarked gaming controls?

I really hope this is a true PSP, with full access to the PSN and capable of playing all past and future PSP games. If not, then this will fail worse then the PSP GO!!!! I and everyone else like me are interested in an all in one mobile entertainment device, not just another cell phone that plays toilet games. I say toilet games, because they are only good for playing while you're sitting on the toilet for a few minutes.

I am surprised Sony are letting this go out as a PS Phone, after all it seems to be a regular phone with tacked on PS controls, using Android rather than in house developed OS seems a bad idea too, as it simply can lead to too much user development which will just result in fragmentation, nothing about this phone seems in line with the Playstation branding.

That's why there's no PS logo on it. Apart from the face button symbols and the start and select buttons there's nothing that says Playstation on it anywhere.
