Electronic Arts has paid close to a reported $20million for Angry Birds publisher, however, it has not bought the game itself.EA confirmed the deal last night, UK time. However, the developer of the best-selling iPhone/iPad game quickly moved to correct the assumption that
Angry Birds, Tweeting via its
RovioMobile account:
"...we did not sell to EA, Chillingo did. We own Angry Birds and all the rights."
EA's official statement on the matter reads, "With the acquisition of Chillingo, EA Mobile has increased market leadership on the Apple platform and strengthened its position as the world's leading wireless entertainment publisher."
There's more of the usual flannel before the company states, "EA is committed to preserving Chillingo's independence enabling them to manage and cultivate their great network of relationships to deliver the optimal gaming experience for consumers."
That's an interesting twist on the idea of 'independent' crowbarred into the same release that states that one company has bought another.
No figure was announced, however,
Reuters reports that, "A source close to the deal told Reuters EA will pay under $20 million in cash plus other undisclosed considerations."
