Motorstorm Dev: Splitscreen 3D like 'a Spectrum Game'
Motorstorm director Matt Southern has said that implementing 3D into a video game doesn't put a huge strain on CPU resources. That argument is "bollocks," apparently. However, splitscreen 3D would be, well, retro...

"You do need a little bit more processing power, but I don't think it's quite the hit that some people are claiming," Southern said over the weekend during a presentation of Motorstorm: Apocalypse. "That might just be the fact that we've been doing it for years now and have kind of got really optimal code.

"I've seen people say that it takes a huge chunk of the processing power. Bollocks. It takes a little."

Southern admitted, however, that resolution can take a hit when creating games in 3D - because "you're basically drawing the game twice. It's a bit like split-screen, which is why there's no 3D split-screen, because then it would look like a Spectrum game."

Motorstorm: Apocalypse will be hitting the PS3 in Spring 2011.

Hmm, that's an interesting thought...

You could abuse a 3D tv to make a two-player 2D game where both players only see their own screens but see them full-screen. Might have to apply for a patent...

@ irritant,
that is a brilliant idea!!
or even better than that and this would make me buy a 3D TV... i put the glasses on and play a 2D computer game. the misses puts the glasses on and watches whatever TV she wants to watch (usually Gilmore girls or something with wedding in the title) i should check that out for a patent..

That actually is a genius idea. Am I right in thinking it would need to be a 200Hz TV though?

@DoctorDee

Just any "normal" active shutter 3D tv. They usually run at 120Hz, I think. 60 for each eye.

@gingineer - They sort of already have screens like that for 2 person viewing in cars, but it's based on the angle you look from. Driver side sees sat nav display, passenger side sees Coronation St.

@irritant Aswell as Sony Tvs in early protypes sold this feature to allow 2 TV channels on same screen by using alternating timings on glasses.
