Subtitles or voice dubbing? That's the $6 million question for any publisher that deals with localising foreign media. In Japan, Square Enix is releasing two versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops - one with English voices and Japanese subtitles, and one with Japanese voices. The subtitled version will hit the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 first on the 18th November. A dubbed version, featuring a "major voice cast" according to Square Enix, will hit shelves on the 16th December. They will both retail at ¥7,980, or about £62.
Square Enix publishes the
Call of Duty series in Japan as part of its 'Extreme Edges' lineup. It made a dubbed and subbed version of
Modern Warfare 2 as well to satisfy gamers,
after a survey revealed that 60% wanted English voices and 40% wanted Japanese.
