Final Fantasy XIV Gimped for Lightweights

A bit like "real-life fatigue" apparently.

Final Fantasy XIV Gimped for Lightweights
If you're planning on spending a lot of time in the upcoming Square Enix MMO Final Fantasy XIV, you might want to think twice.

Director Nobuaki Komoto has detailed plans for the game's levelling system, and it involves limiting the amount of experience points a player gets in a weekly period.

In a message to fans, translated from Japanese by FFXIVCore, Komoto revealed that after the first eight hours of play, the experience points you earn over the following seven hours gradually reduces until you earn absolutely no EXP at all, no matter how many more additional hours you put in. This restriction will reset itself every week.

Komoto likens the gameplay mechanic to a person's "real-life fatigue from working at improving your skills via battle - no-one could train ad nauseam in the real world without any ill effects." The threshold was implemented in order to allow "those players with little time on their hands to play effectively," and "to not give those with more time on their hands to play an unfair advantage."

sounds good in theory, wonder how it'll play out, I mean limiting how long someone will play your game for has to be bad for business right?

Im starting t have second thoughts about this game - I pre ordered it but I think I will be cancelling. If I want to concentrate on one class, this means I can only play it for 32hrs a month or I get penalised ?
This is a subscription game. Works out I would be paying around 50p per hour of play. They better change it before everyone cancels

It's an interesting idea. How about if your character does get fatigued and you must give them time to "sleep" which you do by going offline? You'd have to find a safe place to sleep of course or you could wake up with your possessions stolen.

I have just been straight to the source, http://www.ffxivcore.com/topic/11964-surplus-and-you-komoto-speaks/

*Addendum: the version I translated apparently had a couple lines added to it at some later time. This addition may be important for some of you. "Even if you reach the XP limit mid-week, your fatigue will recover in the time not spent skilling up. The one week period is simply a guarantee that it WILL recover then no matter what."
