Electronic Arts announced that its upcoming modern-day war shooter, Medal of Honor, is to see a prequel in the form of a novel written by ex-SAS soldier Chris Ryan.

The book will focus on the personalities of the main characters in the game, as the reader is introduced to Tier-1 operators 'Rabbit', 'Mother', 'Preacher' and 'Voodoo'. The team is brought together and sent out to operate within a special forces patrol on the ground, but it all goes horribly wrong...

SPOnG was told that the pace of the book is as fast-moving as the game, and that the aim was to let the reader see into the mind of a Tier-1 operator. Ryan spent 10 years in the SAS, and is known for his escape and evasion tactics in the first Gulf War, where he had to travel without food and water over a period of eight days. With the last two years of his enrolment spent training SAS inductees, he should know what he's talking about.

"It was a golden opportunity to work with these guys," Ryan said of his involvement with the Medal of Honor franchise. "Talking as an ex-soldier, there are a number of elements in the game that transport me back into the field. As soon as I saw it, I knew the team were being given advice by Tier-1 operators. It's very realistic, and I wanted to be a part of that."

The book will be available as an incentive for those who pre-order Medal of Honor at HMV retailers.
