Activision and Infinity Ward has squashed rumours that Call of Duty games will require an additional subscription fee to play online, following the circulation of a video that suggested such a system would soon be implemented.
"There's a video that made the rounds today of a 360 player getting a glitchy, incomplete message that uses the phrase "Modern Warfare 2" and half of the word membership," says Activision's Dan Amrich in a post on his personal blog.
"This video shows just a glitch - since you can access a Live subscription renewal from within the MW2 game interface, it appears some data got jammed between two parts of Live. It's not a secret portal to some nefarious plot to charge people for COD multiplayer - and there are no plans to do that."
Infinity Ward's community manager Robert Bowling added his own take on his blog, stating that "there is not, and will never be, additional fees required to subscribe and play Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer." He later posted on Twitter that 'pay to play' will not be introduced on Call of Duty: Black Ops either.
Call of Duty can charge however much they want, I already pay for the (brief) amount that I play it, I certainly won't pay anymore to play such an average game! Activision can jog on if it thinks it will ever get more money off me, definitely going to buy a used copy of future titles and I rate RockBand and MoH/BF:BC over Guitar Hero and CoD anyway..
