Hardware-turned-software developer, Sega, has today unveiled plans to bring its know-how to numerous handheld devices such as mobile phones and PDAs (Personal Digital Assistant).

The company has teamed up with Synovial, a wireless technology provider, to research the possibilities of non-console gaming. At present, the plan is for Synovial to provide Sega with development kits, and Sega to produce the content that can then be marketed to the general public.

So far the two companies have managed to develop Game Gear emulation using the ‘SYN’ dev kits for pocket PCs. The recreation of the handheld classic is said to be highly authentic and near identical to the original.

The software will initially be launched in the US, but a date has not been confirmed as yet. It is unlikely that the technology will feature region lockout, so expect details on a UK release soon.
