There are many credible reports streaming out of Japan that Sony Computer Entertainment has managed to retain the exclusive rights to Tekken 4. It is suggested that SCE managed to dangle enough carrots in front of Namco to steal the fighter away from the grabbing hands of Microsoft and Nintendo.
At this point in time, Sony’s upcoming title list, though strong by anyone’s standards, is overshadowed by the competition. As far as exclusives go, the PlayStation 2 has World Rally Championship, WipeOut Fusion and erm, well, following the release of the Konami killer duo of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Silent Hill 2, not very much.
Every other big game, be it the latest Resident Evil title or either of the upcoming Codemasters driving masterpieces, Colin McRae 3 or the new Toca title, are all confirmed for at least one other platform.
The GameCube and the Xbox have both snared an impressive range of exclusive titles. The Nintendo machine comes equipped as standard with a range of first-party killer applications. Microsoft has used a mixture of clever market wrangling and liberal use of its ample spending division to ensure a nice mixture of Japanese and Western exclusive support.
Sony, perhaps as a result of complacency stemming from the fact that it has had the market all to itself for a very long time, has failed to sign up any killer exclusive titles.
Namco, being somehow swayed towards the PlayStation 2, is hopeful that Sony has realised it needs to step up title acquisition and generate a few PS2 exclusives.
Oh and by the way, Tekken 4 is out in the arcades in Japan and is making its way slowly over to the West. The PlayStation 2 version is rumoured to be planned for a December release.
