The game, currently in development by Japanese company Yukes, of Sword of the Berserk and various WWF games fame, is a story-led action/adventure, with lots of opportunities to show off your combat skills. Those of you expecting to get this game as an early Christmas present are going to be disappointed, however, as the latest news from Eidos’ PR and Marketing department is that the game has slipped to a 2002 release. But that doesn’t mean I can’t tell you a little more about what you can expect when it does make an appearance.
The player takes on the role of Josh Calloway, an employee of the multi-national conglomerate Wisdom Inc, a pioneer in the genetics industry. Josh discovers that Wisdom’s true purpose is to create a deadly weapon capable of mass destruction - The Legacy - by fusing the essence of a human soul with a crystal. Upon learning of his employer’s evil intentions, Josh flees with his girlfriend Eliel Evergrand, but they are captured and Eliel’s soul is forced to become the core of the most powerful Legacy made to date. Sworn to stop Wisdom at all costs, Josh embarks on an epic struggle to save his girlfriend and stop a madman from destroying the world.
EOE: Eve of Extinction boasts Yukes internally developed 3D engine enabling highly detailed, vast 3D environments that are fully interactive. The gameplay focuses on the multi-faceted weapon known as The Legacy. The player collects different power crystals by defeating boss enemies in spectacular battles. These crystals can then be used to transform The Legacy into a variety of weapons, such as swords, whips and axes, all with special qualities such as time-stop, anti-gravity and energy projectiles. The Legacy also plays a key role in the innovative puzzle system as the player will need it to bypass barriers, access unreachable areas, and for avoidance tactics.
As you can see from these latest screens, EOE: Eve of Extinction looks like it’ll be worth waiting for.
