Nintendo has reportedly got its mitts on the Doctor Who license, with the new Doctor, played by Matt Smith, set for an outing on the Wii and DS in a deal apparentl worth upwards of £10m.The game will apparently be out in time for Christmas, although it's only in the early stages of development. That's not
loads of time to get one of the UK's most sought-after IPs whipped up into a polished game.
Doctor Who has been noticeably absent from the gaming landscape since the franchise's return to glory in recent years. The only title to feature the Doctor since 2001 is
Doctor Who: Top Trumps which, let's face it, is not the game Whovians have been hoping for. The BBC has of late, however, been known to be looking to generate a bit of cash by
licensing some of its properties for games.
Monsters and Critics quotes a source stating, "This has been in the pipeline for years. We're delighted to have finally nailed down a deal.
"We went with Nintendo as they have huge appeal for families and Doctor Who is very much a family brand. The Wii console is key for us as it's something families play together.'
A UK
red-top also quotes former Doctor, David Tennant, as saying, "The video game was quite actively developed, but it's difficult to nail as the Doctor doesn't blow things up."
Nintendo, it would seem, is a good fit with the BBC's ambitions for the game.
The Doctor's new telly assistant is actress Karen Gillan, so hopefully we'll be seeing some of her in the game, too.
So, Wii Remote as sonic screwdriver, anyone?
