Sony's Surprise Sequel is Call of ... No, it's SOCOM
Sony Computer Entertainment has revealed its 'surprise sequel' - it's a new PlayStation 3-exclusive SOCOM game from MAG developers Zipper Interactive.

Okay, so not exactly an inspiring 'surprise' there, we'll admit, but what's noteworthy is that the studio is taking some new directions with the series. SOCOM has already seen a release on the PlayStation 3, but this one is apparently being created "from the ground up" for the console.

European Product Manager Richard Yap writes on the PS.Blog that "You've never played a SOCOM game like this." A new single-player campaign will be coupled with 32-player online matches and the usual emphasis on teamwork.

In the new SOCOM game you take control of a member of a five-member elite special forces unit. A revolutionary army in South East Asia has seized a country that harbours a waterway that is key to the global economy, and you have six days to fight through jungles, streets and ruins to complete your mission.

We spoke with Zipper's art director Phil Knowles during the recent release of MAG - perhaps elements of that could end up in a new SOCOM game.
