Sony has plans to eat Apple's lunch in the tablet computer sector, with the company suggesting that it is preparing a competitor to the recently revealed iPad.Nobuyuki Oneda, Sony CFO, spoke of the possibility at a news conference in Tokyo, during a financial results presentation. He said “That is a market we are also very interested in. We are confident we have the skills to create a product. Time-wise we are a little behind the iPad but it's a space we would like to be an active player in.”
Creating a product and making said product a success are two different things, although Sony has a hit with the Reader e-book device, so perhaps it does have some clout to challenge Apple. We wonder if such a device would be able to
connect to the PlayStation Network for further expansion of applications and services – sounds like the sort of cross-pollination that Sony has been wanting to do for some time, so it makes sense.
The iPad, according to
PC World, “isn't expected to impact the e-book reader market,” although if there's one thing we've all learned in recent years, it's to never underestimate Apple. Sony could have a fight on its hands on its own turf.
