Visceral Games' Executive Producer Jonathan Knight has said that the studio has “no plans” to make a sequel to Dante's Inferno, aiming to focus of expansions instead. The game, based on the famous poem
The Divine Comedy, is due for release on Friday but many reviewers have noted that the ending sequence contains the line “To Be Continued.” Despite the suggestion of a follow-up though, Knight said to
Industry Gamers that Visceral are in fact going the other direction in planning a prequel add-on.
“I've read the entire
divine comedy and I've given it some thought, but there are no plans [for a sequel],” Knight reveals. “We are working on expansions to
Dante's Inferno that will be coming out soon, like a prequel campaign that shows the dark forest and unveil.”
Perhaps a sequel will come later, or is simply not worth covering –
Dante's Inferno is positioned to cover the first of three parts of the poem (Inferno), so we may see Dante's Purgatorio and Paradiso yet.
In terms of full projects though, Visceral are set on
Dead Space 2. “It's moving into full production and the company is excited about it. I've seen it internally, and it's looking incredible. They have some great ideas – it's still a space horror piece, but they've expanded upon the first game nicely,” Knight teases.
But the Executive Producer did say that
Dante's Inferno would live on as a brand, through non-game mediums such as comics and action figures. SPOnG saw an animated feature that ties in with the game at a Piccadilly première last night, and we'll let you know later today what we thought of it.
Finally, given that Dante Alighieri - being dead - can't be contacted for comment on whether he's going to create a sequel, we've got to figure that Visceral will probably move onto creating a game based on some other poem:
Under Milk Wood, the hack'n'slash anybody?
