Surely a mistake.

EA's FIFA World Cup Uses FIFA 11 Engine
Want to get the quarter final game in which plucky England goes out of the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa to lucky Germany/Brazil/USA/Australia out of the way before the actual game?

Easy, EA Canada is producing 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa (the game), and it have the game ready for retail on April 27, 2010 in North America, and April 30 in Europe and Asia on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and PSP... no PC apparently.

What is more strange, however, is that according to EA, the game features "a more sophisticated, faster-paced and responsive version of the market-leading EA SPORTS football engine that drives the award-winning FIFA 11 - the highest rated sports game on this console generation."

Eh? FIFA 11? We're going to have a quick word with EA about this one.

But for now, some MotD-like highlights:

- "Full and authentic online tournament mode." This enables you to "Compete under the same conditions your real-world heroes will face in South Africa, from the group stage through the knockout rounds" to the final. Now we're assuming that means the Finals group stages, not the qualifying group stages. However, EA says, that for "fans of nations that failed to qualify for South Africa this is the chance to replay and re-write history."

Right, so, it's all the FIFA 10 teams but with South African stadiums but using the FIFA 11 engine?

Indeed it is, the game "features all 199 national teams that took part in qualification, all 10 officially licensed stadiums to be used in South Africa and stadiums from each qualifying region." So, sort of FIFA 10 then, but without club teams?

What's new? This, "confetti cannons, streamers, & fireworks—just like the official tournament. Plus, supporters who follow their heroes to South Africa will be in the stands waving their country’s flag, holding giant banners and cheering in their native language."

So, FIFA 10 or 11 then, but with cannons?

We especially liked this feature though, "Altitude Effects — Less air resistance at altitude means the ball travels faster and further. Plus, player will noticeably fatigue faster and their stamina challenged while playing in cities at higher elevations versus sea level."

Full details here.
