All PS3s Get 3D Upgrade
All PlayStation 3 consoles will have the ability to play 3D games and 3D Blu-ray content, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer announced at the company's Consumer Electronics Show press event last night.

The capability will be introduced by way of a firmware update. Stringer said that Sony Corporation has a firm commitment to implementing 3D technology across its entire product range. “We're working hard to making Sony devices already in the home 3D friendly,” the CEO revealed.

3D was the big message from the company's event in Las Vegas, and Stringer boasted that “Sony is the only company fully immersed in every link of the 3D value chain. We intend to take the lead [in the technology].”

Have your say in the forums below - Are you looking forward to 3D? Will you be one of the first to take advantage of the tech in your newly upgraded PS3 or Blu-ray player, or is it all a load of pap?

Papulous and papulum, mostly, for sure. But massively enjoyable fun when it DOES work. Super Stardust in 3D! Bring it.

Look at 3D in the cinema - other than the good stuff from Pixar (+ Coraline - was that Pixar?), there is A LOT of pap. But the quality stuff outshines all of that s**t. I want Rez 3D. I want Sega Rally in 3D with mud spattering my face. I want Super Mario Next-thing in 3D (yeah, I realise that announcement is not until E3 2014...)

Also, Minter is messing around with 3D right now. That could well be interesting. Can you call him up for a chat about it?

@DrkStr istr reading that any PS3 game could be made 3d TV compatible - it woudl be just a patch away. I guess the biggest hurdle for developers is the framerate as you'll end with half the framerate cuz they have to output one separate frame for each eye - so its only going to work with games that run now at 60fps. Cutting a 30fps frames down to get 3d at 15fps is just gonna make you sick.

i suppose the 1080p 30fps games could sacrifice rez to up pump the fps to do 3d
