Doom 3 has completely taken over the focus of legendary development team id Software, with Quake 4 being passed to Raven Software to complete.
It seems that John Carmack has opted to go back to his and the company’s roots, and favours developing a Doom title over a Quake game.
Will this not lead to a certain level of competition between the two games? It seems unavoidable. Both companies will want to produce the ultimate first person shooter and stepping on each other’s toes seems inevitable. Or will id tone down or eliminate and multiplayer options from Doom? We will have to wait and see.
Raven is currently developing Soldier of Fortune 2 for as yet unspecified multiple platforms. It is well known that this game only accounts for around half of the resources available to Raven at this time.
A full announcement can be expected at QuakeCon, held in Mesquite, Texas on August 10th this year. No-one at either Activision, Raven or id was willing to comment today.
