Square' Enix's top man, Yoichi Wada, has stated that console makers including Microsoft and Sony are "already prepared" for the imminent switch for interactive entertainment from "software run on hardware in the home to server-based offerings, game streaming and digital distribution", says MCV.The UK video games journal quotes Wada as saying that "In ten years’ time a lot of what we call ‘console games’ won’t exist." According to the Square chief, this drift to server-based games has been in action with platform holders since 2005.
The interview also includes the statement that Wada "claimed that format-holders including Sony and Microsoft are already prepared for the shift – and that third-parties must follow suit."
