Sony Computer Entertainment recently and proudly displayed the internal and external model of the PlayStation 2’s hard drive. The first game to use the nifty little data storage machine is the massive Final Fantasy X from Square.
Throngs of Japanese gamers scurried out to buy the game and hard drive, took it home and were mortified to discover that the game needed INSTALLING onto the hard drive before it could be played! Can you imagine the embarrassment?
It is a well known fact that our Japanese cousins are not fans of this kind of PC style gaming. To combat this objection, Microsoft confirmed in the early stages of the Xbox’s life that it would not approve any game that required a hard drive install.
Final Fantasy X uses the hard drive as a data cache to enable reduced loading times between cut scenes and normal play, and normal play and battle sequences.
