SegaNet, Sega of America’s online division, has outsourced its current and future online operations to a third party, namely ISP Earthlink.
Earthlink will now take control of all Sega’s online operations in the territory. SegaNet will now be solely responsible for implementing technologies to enable online gaming for the company.
The deal also includes licenses for the hosting of Sega games for the PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox.
This is the latest move made by Sega as it powers up to become a leader in cross-platform online gaming, and follows on from the company’s decision to begin to test the pay-to-play gaming revenue model with Phantasy Star Online Version 2.
There was no mention of how Sega sees its European online operation shaping up, but expect some kind of announcement soon.
