Sega gears up on-line pay to play. A glimpse of the future?

Counting the cost of on-line play

Sega of America has announced its on-line gaming pricing plan which will be initiated when Phantasy Star On-line Version2 is released Stateside on September 11th.

The company will be charging American punters $15 for three month period of access to game servers. This will give players unlimited access for this time but the subscription must be renewed every three months.

So what do you think? About a tenner gets you three-month access to a game. Is this a bit pricey or about right?

There is no doubt that Sega is using PSO Version 2 to test the water for online subscription based gaming. The company has stated that, since it’s move away from hardware, it sees next generation online gaming to be the future of the industry and is already hatching plans to make Crazy Taxi followed by new Jet Set and Sega GT online experiences. It is likely that Sega will host its own games on Sega servers and charge a similar fee.
