While we didn't really expect Sony to sell a metric ton of PSPgo handhelds at the RRP of £224.99, there are some surprising moves in the retail industry that suggest a deeper problem, with several outlets reducing the price of the new product to under £200 in its first weekend.
According to a report from
Eurogamer, four retailers - Amazon.co.uk, Play.com, HMV and GAME - have marked the PSP Go down to £199. Some retailers, such as Argos, had priced the unit under RRP before launch (Argos for example is still selling the Go at £219.99), so perhaps this isn't so much a knee-jerk reaction to initial sales and more of a communal baulk at the prospect of not getting any real software sales.
SCEE said just yesterday that the PSP Go has been
performing "in line with [its] expectations", but whether the sales lift experienced across the PSP range had more to do with the increasing developer support or the new digital-download model remains to be seen.
