Jack Tretton: Sony is in between Microsoft and Nintendo

Soft interviewing saves his day

Posted by Staff
In what must pass as the softest interview ever broadcast by a company claiming to be a serious news outlet, Forbes' Quentin Hardy serves up some spectacularly unsearching questions to Sony America's CEO, Jack Tretton. See the whole thing below. However, if you'd prefer some highlights try:

How well has the PS3 done since price cuts and Slim?

"Skyrocketing sales, couldn't be happier with the numbers that we're seeing."

Quentin:"What do you like about Microsoft?"

Jack: "I like their money... I think they can afford to be more patient, we're very profit driven, we're interested in ROI in a fairly short period of time. I think Microsoft is prepared to go at it from a very steep curve in terms of profitability."

What about Nintendo?

"Nintendo is almost the polar opposite. They know what they do well and they stick to it. They deliver a casual, youth-oriented entertainment experience that's very enjoyable after 20 years. And they make money, they print money. Their profitability is their key focus and features are nice but profitability is king...."

So, what about Sony?

"We see ourselves somewhere in the middle," but, "The environment where PlayStation wins is best for the industry".

Finally, Jack mentions that Apple might be coming to play in games... but in fact "everybody should be interested (in the games industry)".

Watch the entire 9.5 minutes of flannel below and hope against hope that someone in American media still remembers how to ask a hard question.
