Amazing cross platform Capcom Vs SNK news!

Oh my God! Arcade vs Dreamcast Vs PS2... All online...

You are going to love this. Capcom of Japan has announced that it will be releasing Capcom Vs SNK for Naomi Arcade, Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 all within a month of each other in Japan. Not the most earth shattering news.

The reason for this is to enable all three platforms to link-up via broadband Internet connection and facilitate the first ever real-time, cross-platform fighting game.

The rapid conversions were completed using Capcom’s latest porting technique known as Library Scheme which utilises the code similarities between Naomi, Dreamcast, PlayStation 2 and System 264 Arcade board. There is a synergy between the integral operating code of the Naomi system and System 264, enabling stable and compatible console versions to be produced. Understand?

This will mean that in Japan, later this year, PlayStation 2 owners will be able to play against Dreamcast owners and the bad kids standing around in arcades! How cool is that!?

The games will be hosted on Capcom’s KDDI broadband servers. Capcom also promises to ensure that lag is kept to an absolute minimum.

It is likely that this system will be rolled out into America, but as usual, Europe remains in the dark. How annoying. Capcom Europe has already exclusively told us that it has no interest in publishing the Dreamcast version of this stunning title.

We have also been informed by Capcom Europe that it is unlikely that Europe will see this kind of innovative cross-platform gaming due to the poor penetration of broadband services in the territory. However we were also told that, “The cross platform enabled code is likely to hit our shores. It would make no sense not to include it for some future use. There is a delay before we get web enabled PlayStation 2’s so there really is no rush. The Naomi cabinets are not region specific, so it is a possibility, but not for at least a year. We will have to reassess European broadband and see if it’s a goer.”

Fingers crossed then, fighting fans!
