Scott Pilgrim, Bryan Lee O'Malley's beat-'em-up/rom com comic and soon-to-be film, is getting turned into a game by Ubisoft.
The title will be a side-scrolling brawler that harks back to the 8 and 16 bit games of old that have heavily influenced the comic. It's being developed to coincide with the release of the film (some time in 2010), but will feature the over-the-top Manga art style of the comic.
Fights in the comic are insane (there are psychic vegans, awesome bionic ninjas and robots), so expect that to spill into the game along with, according to O'Malley, plenty of characters and Easter Eggs for fans.
The game's being developed over at Ubisoft Montreal. Speaking to Comic Book Resources about the game, O'Malley elaborated, saying, "I don't know if some people know this, but there's this
Ninja Turtles game that came out a couple of years ago based on the recent CGI film, and the Gameboy Advance version was really cool (We think he means
this one). A lot of the same people that worked on that worked on this game, so it should be cool. Hopefully some of that will rub off on this."
The comic revolves around Scott, a 20-something Canadian slacker who has to fight Ramona Flowers' seven evil ex-boyfriends so he can date her. He's in a band called Sex Bob-omb and his opponents tend to do things like explode into showers of coins when he beats them. The comics pretty much have 'make me into a game' written all over them. The movie stars
Juno's Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
