DC Comics' character Green Lantern is rumoured to be getting a game all to himself.
VentureBeat is the source of the rumour, citing "multiple sources close to the project". The publication claims that Warner Bros. (which owns DC and therefore
Green Lantern) has engaged Double Helix (
G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra,
Silent Hill: Homecoming) to develop the game. The title will reportedly be out alongside the upcoming film, which is due out in Summer 2011.
Warner Bros., for its part, called the report “rumour and speculation.”
Green Lantern's been doing OK for himself recently. In comics, the property is the focal point of DC's big summer event,
Blackest Night. In Tinseltown the character's been grabbing headlines thanks to Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool in
X-Men Origins: Wolverine) being
attached to star.
GL's never had a game of his own actually make it into the world (there was one developed for the SNES, but it
never saw the light of day). He recently appeared in
Mortal Kombat vs DCU and will feature in
DCU Online, but he's never actually flown solo. The problem that leaps to mind is - can GL's powers (he can make just about anything out of willpower-based energy) be properly translated into an enjoyable gaming experience?
